Introduction to MEISNER ACTING TECHNIQUE
Students are guided through a system of exercises developed by Sanford Meisner. Through improvisation, repetition, independent activity, and scene work, the technique creates a more specific, skilled, and authentic actor with an organic, spontaneous, and disciplined instrument.. The work is designed to develop the actor’s concentration and strengthen the actor’s instrument to be both responsive and expressive within the imaginary circumstances.
The Meisner Technique is a brick-by-brick process where actors learn to put focus and attention on the most important thing: the other actor. For this Sandy created the Repetition Exercise. AN exercises that might seem simple and mundane but slowly transforms into a moment-to-moment connection between two hyper-focused individuals.
We will then introduce the Independent Activity. The Independent Activity was built on the other core principle of the Meisner Technique — acting is doing. We will teach you to do an activity truthfully under imaginary circumstances.
During the first session, we continue to add foundational exercises to deepen the actor’s work, like how to memorize a script effectively, how to be more impulsive in your work, and many more. After these basics are established, we introduce one of Sandy’s most important teachings: Preparation.
